The facts about single- or double-armoured doors

We often hear from potential buyers who were confused when asked to choose between a single- and double-armoured door.
I have been in the security door and safe manufacturing business for 40years. I have never seen specifications for a single-armoured door written into in any standard and no one at any respectable manufacturing and testing lab for passive security systems, which includes security doors, has taught me about them.
Anyone can make a door by shaping a sheet of metal, adding a lock, covering both sides with cladding and then calling it a single-armoured security door.
Somebody else can shape two sheets of metal, add a lock in-between and two layers of cladding inside and out and call it a double-armoured security door.
I simplified things by trying to help buyers think carefully to ensure they make the best decision about which door to buy, one that will offer protection against burglary attempts.
I inform all potential buyers in the market for a security door that when asked if they want a single-or double- armoured door, they should investigate further, either because of ignorance on the manufacturer’s part to make such claims, or a deliberate attempt to take advantage of the buyer’s lack of knowledge.
I’ll stop here….
Technically, I could say more about security doors and locks. But I also welcome any serious intended technical challenge, as long as it is not anonymous. A dialogue with substantiated technical arguments is a source of knowledge and provides more complete information for potential buyers and for security door manufacturers.
Respect for customers, and respect for values and rules is in everyone’s interest.

Vasilis Siamos

Are security doors burglar prof?

Unfortunately on a daily basis, buyers of armoured security doors become victims of crime since first they have fallen prey to deceptive information by sellers of security products.

Some typical examples of deceiving the buying public and randomly renaming a simple door to an armoured security one are: single armoured doors, armoured doors that can be cut with sheet metal scissors, locks and cylinders of low reliability, door installations with polyurethane instead of cement and decorative defender for the cylinder’s protection instead of authentic ones.

Armoured security doors that meet the specifications concerning the manufacture and installation, are not being violated, but are only wrecked after long lasting and noisy effort with electrical tools.

At SIAMO we have evidence supporting that all our shielding models can be violated only after ultimate destruction of the security door. This signifies that if a SIAMO security door is locked with a new generation lock, the only way for someone to intrude into your property is with electric drill or other electric tools. The large amount of time wasted is relevant to the shielding model (thickness and arrangement of inner metals) till one finally manages to destroy the main body of the door.

Characteristically, we refer to actual reported incidents where the burglars after long hours of trying to break down the armoured security doors of our company, they left the building without having the slightest chance of entering into the property.

In conclusion, an actual armoured security door ensures high security for a long period of time against burglar tools of the present time.

What are the facts about burglar resistance classes and certifications

What are the facts about security classifications that some people recently have been raising, others lowering, some claiming to be the only ones to offer them, and others claiming whatever suits them, while others say nothing at all? Of course there are certifications and classes, and naturally those who manufacture security doors should know and apply international standards(e.g. ENV 1627- EN 1522- FB6-FB7).
BUT WHAT REALLY HAPPENS IN PRACTICE?
It’s true that abiding by the rules and using authentic materials means the cost goes up, and that is where door and lock resistance is compromised. What is even more true, as noted in recent years, is that a large proportion of security door manufacturers take advantage of customers’ ignorance and invent non-existent certifications and classes.
THESE ARE THE FACTS:
Methods used to break into homes and businesses are constantly changing and no certification can protect consumers if the following are ignored:
Security doors: metal thickness and distribution-welding method.
Lock: how it is secured onto the door, how reliable it is against both old and new burglary methods.
Proper dimensions: construction of door (height-width) to the size of the opening in the wall.
Installation: specialized and controlled work crews-mounting methods.

To ensure all of the above, it is important to select a reliable company that closely monitors developments in the field, manufactures products to high-security specifications and delivers on its promises.

At SIAMO, we know, we respect and we apply the standards and add more to security and locks because that is we specialize in.
At SIAMO, we started in 1980 gradually introducing six different security models (later called classes). These were codified and included a break-down of technical specifications. They were also subject to continuous improvements in security features using cutting-edge, high security locks. Classes provide minimum limits, never maximum.
For your information, up until July 2013, there was no accredited institute or university in Greece that issued certificates or provided certification of burglary resistance classes for security doors. In addition, to our knowledge, the Greek Ministry of Public Safety is not competent to issue any anti-burglary or resistance class certificates, as some claim.

There is also a difference between ISO standards, classes, materials resistance testing departments and competence to issue class certificates.
It is important to understand that institutes only certify the sample provided to them by applicants for testing and certification. After that, it is up to the manufacturer to comply with the specifications on the tested product.
No institute prohibited increased security in keeping up with the times or the application of high security locks which are constantly advancing.

At SIAMO, we manufacture doors that far exceed the nominal resistance classes, and always offer you the opportunity to see the interior of your door while it is being made at the
plant.
